Frequently Asked Questions

These questions and answers are meant to give you a sense of what telehealth therapy in New York looks like with Reflections Mental Health Services. If you are unsure about anything, you are invited to reach out and ask.

What is telehealth therapy?

Telehealth therapy is counseling that takes place by secure video or phone instead of in person. You meet with your therapist from a private space, using your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Sessions are similar to traditional therapy—focused on your concerns, goals, and well-being—but delivered in a more flexible and convenient way.

Who do you work with?

Reflections Mental Health Services primarily works with adults. People seek support for many reasons, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship stress, work or school challenges, grief, and major life transitions. Together, we work at a pace that feels manageable and respectful of your experiences.

How do I schedule or request an appointment?

You can request an appointment by completing the contact form at the bottom of this page or by reaching out through the contact information listed there. You can briefly share what you are looking for, and we will respond, usually within one business day, to discuss next steps and scheduling.

What technology do I need for telehealth?

Most people use a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera, microphone, and a stable internet connection. Sessions take place on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. If video is not possible or does not feel comfortable for you, we can discuss whether phone sessions are a good option.

How is my privacy and confidentiality protected?

Protecting your privacy is a priority. Sessions are held on a secure platform designed for healthcare, and efforts are made to ensure that you are in a private space where you feel safe to talk openly. As with in-person therapy, what you share is confidential, with a few legal and ethical exceptions that your therapist will explain, such as concerns about immediate safety.

Is telehealth therapy appropriate in an emergency or crisis?

Telehealth therapy is not designed for emergencies. If you are in immediate danger, thinking about harming yourself or someone else, or experiencing a medical or psychiatric emergency, please do not wait for a therapy appointment. Call 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Once you are safe and stable, therapy can be a place to process what happened and explore ongoing support.

What are your fees, and do you take insurance?

We are in-network with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield. If you carry one of these plans, your sessions are typically covered with a copay or after your deductible has been met — we recommend confirming your specific mental-health benefits with your insurer before your first session.

If your plan isn’t one of the above, we accept out-of-network benefits and can provide a “superbill” you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement, depending on your plan. Self-pay rates are also available: $100 for a 45-minute individual session, $150 for a 60-minute individual session, and $200 for a 60-minute couples session.

For full details, see our Insurance & Billing page. If cost is a concern, please mention this when you reach out so we can talk about options together. You can also explore additional support resources through the New York State Office of Mental Health.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Life happens, and appointments sometimes need to be changed. We require 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows may incur a fee. Insurance does not cover missed appointments. Whenever possible, we will work with you to find a new time that fits your schedule.

What is the first session like?

The first session is a chance for you to share what has been going on and what you hope will be different. Your therapist will ask gentle, open-ended questions to understand your history, current concerns, and strengths. You are always free to move slowly, pause, or skip questions that feel uncomfortable. Together, you decide on initial goals and whether continuing feels like a good fit.

How long do sessions last, and how often will we meet?

Standard sessions are usually about 45–60 minutes. Many people start with weekly appointments to build momentum and a sense of safety in the therapy relationship. Over time, sessions may become less frequent, depending on your needs, progress, and preferences.

How long do people usually stay in therapy?

The length of therapy varies from person to person. Some people come for a shorter period to focus on a specific situation. Others stay longer to work through deeper patterns or longstanding difficulties. You and your therapist will check in periodically about how therapy is feeling and whether it continues to meet your needs.
