Aetna Mental Health Benefits in New York: How to Actually Use Them

Blog cover for a step-by-step guide on how to use Aetna mental health benefits in New York, with a purple and gold color palette.

If you have Aetna and you’re trying to find therapy in New York, the good news is your insurance does cover mental health care. The frustrating news is that the process of actually using those benefits is opaque, the in-network directory is incomplete, and most therapists don’t list their insurance clearly. Here’s what you need to know to find an Aetna therapist in New York without burning a weekend on hold.

What Aetna typically covers for mental health

  • Outpatient psychotherapy — individual therapy sessions, usually 45-60 minutes
  • Telehealth therapy — covered at the same rate as in-person on most current plans
  • Initial intake / diagnostic evaluation — your first session is billed differently than subsequent ones
  • Psychiatric medication management — separate from therapy; usually requires a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner
  • Some couples therapy — case-by-case; usually only if one partner has a billable diagnosis

What’s not typically covered: pure couples or family therapy without a clinical diagnosis, life coaching, wellness retreats, and most relationship counseling that isn’t tied to a billable mental-health code.

The 3 questions to ask Aetna before you book

Before booking with any therapist, call the member services number on the back of your Aetna card and ask:

  1. What is my copay or coinsurance for outpatient mental-health visits? (This is what you’ll pay per session)
  2. Do I have a deductible to meet first, and how much have I met so far this year? (Some plans require you to pay the full session rate until the deductible is met)
  3. Are telehealth mental-health sessions covered the same as in-person? (Most are, but verify in writing)

Bonus question: ask them to email you a “verification of benefits” document. That paper trail prevents surprises if billing later disagrees.

What an Aetna therapy session typically costs in New York

  • Copay-based plan: $20–$50 per session after deductible (most common)
  • Coinsurance-based plan: 20-30% of the contracted rate, typically $30–$80 per session
  • High-deductible plan: Full session rate ($100-$200) until deductible is met, then copay/coinsurance kicks in

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can use those funds for therapy copays and deductibles.

Why “in-network with Aetna” matters more than “accepts Aetna”

Some therapists accept Aetna out-of-network — meaning they’ll provide a superbill you submit for partial reimbursement. That’s better than nothing, but the math rarely works out as well as in-network care:

  • In-network: You pay your copay/coinsurance at session. Aetna pays the rest. Done.
  • Out-of-network: You pay the full rate up front, submit paperwork, and get reimbursed weeks later for whatever percentage Aetna’s out-of-network policy allows (often 50-60% after a separate, higher deductible is met).

Reflections is in-network with Aetna, which means you pay your standard copay or coinsurance and we handle the billing directly. More details on our Insurance & Billing page.

How to find an in-network Aetna therapist in New York

  1. Start with Aetna’s directory at aetna.com — search for “behavioral health” providers in your zip code. Filter for telehealth if you want virtual.
  2. The directory is incomplete and out of date. Many in-network therapists aren’t listed, and many listed therapists are no longer accepting new clients. Don’t rely on it as the only source.
  3. Cross-reference with Psychology Today or Zocdoc. Many therapists indicate insurance acceptance there.
  4. When you find candidates, call or message them directly and ask: “Are you currently in-network with Aetna [your specific plan name] and accepting new clients?” Get a yes before booking.

You can also contact us directly — we’ll verify your specific Aetna plan and confirm your benefits in your first call.

If your specific Aetna plan isn’t accepted

  • We can still see you on an out-of-network basis and provide a superbill for reimbursement
  • Self-pay rates are $100 (45-min individual), $150 (60-min individual), $200 (60-min couples)
  • Sliding-scale or payment plans may be available — ask

Don’t let insurance be the reason you don’t start

The single biggest predictor of whether someone gets mental health care isn’t insurance status — it’s whether they made the call. If insurance is unclear, call us and we’ll figure it out together. Don’t let a confusing benefits summary be the reason you wait three more months to feel better.
